PROJECT LOCATION: Kumasi, Ghana
I find it very disturbing to see people, both adults and children sleeping on the streets, going through abuse, violence and being exposed to deadly diseases. This may be as a result of broken homes, poverty, school drop out etc.
I have female friends who dropped out of school because of some financial problems and to escape sexual and verbal abuse, who ended up on the streets with no roof over their heads. These people who try to escape abuse end up facing the same abuse on the streets, even worse. They become beggars or face child abuse in the case of children. We don’t want to see this problem get out of hands when we have a solution.
What’s your solution? As a second year Architecture student, my friends and I have decided to start the Portable Architecture Movement (P.A.M) to provide the homeless with portable homes. The homes are going to be made of old shipping containers and other recyclable materials. Providing them with these portable homes will provide security for them and make them feel safe.
My colleagues and I have numerous architectural designs of the portable homes and two containers to start with so far. I believe that with your help and support we can make this project a success.
